INTRODUCTION TO PUTNAM COUNTY
Putnam County has traditionally been a rural county, although rapid growth, due mainly to its location, is changing the county into a suburban area.
Location
Putnam County is located between the two largest cities in West Virginia; the city of Huntington in Cabell County is 30 miles to the west, and the capital city of Charleston in Kanawha County is 20 miles to the east.
Population & Growth
The 2010 US Census reported Putnam County with a population of 55,486 reflecting an increase of 3,897( 7.6 %) from the 2000 US Census. Population density is 106.5 persons per square mile. Putnam County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state.
Major Industries
Electrical Power Generation, Chemical Companies, Distribution and Auto Parts Manufacturing comprise major industries. Because of the close proximity to the Capitol, many residents are employed by the State Government.
