Innovation has been the buzzword in recent years of educational institutions,
as well as the corporate world. How does Christ Presbyterian Academy view
innovation? As Christians, innovation can be best regarded as inspired
(“God-breathed”) instruction by professionals dedicated to discipleship,
committed to obeying His commands, and carrying out His purpose.
Innovation
in Connecting the Heart and Mind
Prior to the start of the 2016-17 school year, the entire CPA faculty and
staff read the book The Innovator’s Mindset: Empower Learning, Unleash
Talent, and Lead a Culture of Creativity by George Couros. The author
affirmed what we already knew, that to have meaningful change and
impact learning, educators must develop relationships, build trust,
and create an atmosphere where their students feel known, secure, and
loved. There must be a connection between the heart and the mind.

Chapel speakers work hard to be innovative at a Christian school
where students are familiar with most of the popular chapel topics.
Speaker Tim Dennison raised the bar. Last February, Tim flew to
Nashville from California to spend two full days at CPA. He has a
rather unusual story; one of difficulty, death, abuse, incarceration, and

redemption. He spent time as a member of the notorious L.A. Crips and
as a Special Forces Green Beret soldier with combat experience in the
original Desert Storm.
Instead of speaking in Chapel and quickly departing, Tim planned
his visit with intentional extended time at the Academy, talking with
students in Bible classes, K-12. Students seemed to instantly connect
with Tim, and conversations were authentic, meaningful, and relevant.
After one student shared some especially difficult challenges during the
past year, Tim offered deep words of encouragement and then surprised
the student with the gift of a Special Forces Ops hat – unforgettable!

Fans and families aren’t always aware that many of our coaching
staff gather voluntarily at regularly scheduled times throughout the
year for the purpose of personal growth, Bible studies, or professional
development. CPA coaches continually seek new ways to improve in
order to offer their best to the students under their leadership and
influence.
