Review by Sean Coyle
It has been said that the testament to a great
pop song is when you can’t get it out of your
head, be it sitting at your desk in work or
strolling around the supermarket. Enter Dublin
based singer Jackal and his single The Reaper.
From its guitar strummed intro to its power
vocal climax The Reaper showcases this
home-grown talent to the core. The Reaper is
bristling with funky energetic rhythms, guitar
licks, and suspenseful lyrics setting a tense
filled dramatic tone to the song, it also
66
compliments the singers very good voice as
well as illuminating his song writing ability.
Jackal and his musicians are all students at
BIMM Dublin.
There is also a live video available from The
Mercantile, Dublin with Jackal and his band
performing the song with a superb intro
covering Jefferson Airplanes Somebody To
Love. The Porridge remix could easily rival
the mainstream pop radio and club landscape
with its slamming electro fused beats which
4.5
add to the melodic structure of the song.
In his press release Jackal has said the lyrics
are about “the relationship an artist has with
both his romantic life, and his artistic output”
that’s a very deep insight but the tension of this
selfish kind of love pays off with a really
interesting catchy song.
Hopefully it will pay off and we will hear
more of Jackal in the future.
