A new TV show with Vic-
torian and fantasy theme
hit the TV four years ago.
It was first aired in Great
Britain and in the USA.
Its premiere took place
in March at the South by
Southwest film festival. It
made its first appearance
on channel Showtime.
We can thank John Logan
(Skyfall, Hugo, The Ava-
tar) who has been nom-
inated for Oscar as the
best screenwriter for cre-
ating this TV show.
The TV show is named af-
ter newspapers which used
to be published in the 19th
century in Great Britain.
These newspapers were
also called ‘’Penny Dread-
fuls’’ and they were full of
fictional stories which have
their origins on this Island.
I am introducing you all
the main characters whose
destiny is being manipu-
lated by the caprice of the
victorian era.
The show itself is a per-
fect crossover of vari-
ous characters from the
classic horror literature.
These characters are for
example Dorian Gray (Os-
car Wilde: The Picture of
Dorian Gray), Mina Harker
and Abraham Van Hels-
ing (Bram Stoker: Drac-
ula) and Victor Franken-
stein
(Mary Shelley:
Frankenstein). We can also
see that the TV show was
inspired by the film League
of the Extraordinary Gen-
tlemen, which was made
from comic that has the
same name as the film.
It is a mix of various clas-
sic stories and it’s made in
a way that if you know at
least one of the characters
already mentioned you are
going to enjoy it. The Vic-
torian era is magical on its
own.
The cast is also very in-
teresting. There is a lot of
main characters. Eva Green
(Casino Royal, The Golden
Compass, Dark Shado ws,
300: Rise of Empire) is with-
out a doubt the actress
with the best performance.
Vanessa Ives is possessed
by the devil and Eva was
able to perform certain
scenes so greatly that shiv-
ers ran through your spine
