ZODIAC
A killer who mocked the police
„I love killing people,
because it´s so much
fun.““ – Zodiac
Zodiac (or Red Phantom) was
a nickname of a mysterious
serial killer who operated in
Northern California in the
late 1960s and early 1970s.
His identity remains unk-
nown, with more than 2 500
suspects and with FBI and
police of San Francisco still
working on this open case.
Zodiac murdered his victims
between december 1968 and
october 1969. His targets
were three women and two
men between the ages of
16 to 30 years. Even though
the killer touts with 37 vic-
tims, none of the bodies or
the evidence was found. Till
1976 he wrote threatening or
mocking letters to newspa-
pers and police, then his
communication with open
world suddenly ended.
The first possible attack was
arranged on the night of
20th of December 1968 when
David Faraday (17) with his
girlfriend (16) were viciously
shot in their heads near their
car on Lake Herman Road in
Vallejo. The police was left
confused because lacking of
any evidence, motive of mur-
der and a possible suspect.
Then, early in the mor-
ning on July 5th 1969, Dar-
lene Ferrin (22) with her
boyfriend Mike Mageau (19)
were sitting in their car near
Vallejo, when a man with a
flashlight approached them
and then repeatedly fired a
gun in their direction. Ferrin
died while Mike suffered a
serious injury and was trans-
ported to the hospital. A
hour after the attack a man
called the police confessing
his guilt for both of the at-
tacks but it turned out fake
because of lacking similarity
with the Mageau´s descrip-
tion of their attacker.
