What was your childhood like?

• Childhood was fun. I grew up in a kampong called Kampong Chantek (explains my good looks! Hehe!) I have a big family, 3 brothers and 1 sister. I am the ‘youngest’ (not so young now!). My Father was a lorry driver and my mother worked the land and took care of us. She would grow tapioca and vegetables to sell to neighbours and we reared our own poultry such as ducks and chickens, and by that token, my mother slaughtered the animals herself (I helped!) and we were brought up not being afraid of blood.

• I followed my brothers everywhere – catching spiders to fight, catching grasshoppers to play. I caught mosquito larvae and kept them in bottles to watch them change. I also caught caterpillars to watch them metamorphosize. These are things our students will not get to experience…
