When I started writing this book , it was the end of 2015 . At that time , Barack Obama was still our president and we were trying to decide who would be on the presidential ticket in 2016 .
Originally , I named the book From Outrage to Action . I chose that name because it seemed the Left was always outraged about a variety of injustices . We could be counted on to pour out into the streets for protests or to boycott certain businesses . Yet I never saw any meaningful political progress resulting from all that energy and intention . Power - and the acquisition of political power - was still eluding us . At that time , the Republican Party controlled 33 state legislatures across the nation . We had been out of power at the federal level since 2010 . Our policies were stuck in the quagmire of Republican intransigence . For many , protesting and boycotting was perhaps the only empowering thing we felt we could do .
