Teams that work well together are teams that understand each other . When you understand the communication patterns and tendencies of your team members , you can cut through the conflict and encourage healthy relationships .
P : your groundbreaking research analyzed over one million professionals and their patterns of success . What surprised you about the results ? H : What separates certain professionals from the rest of the pack ? Is it skill or knowledge ? Expertise or seniority ? Or is it simply charisma ? Turns out , it ’ s none of the above .
In my decade of research inside hundreds of companies , I discovered a new trend . High-performers communicate differently , and the most valued professionals consciously decide to over-deliver in select ways . As a result , they become difficult to replace , because they emphasize their natural traits . They earn advocates in the workplace and customer base and become irreplaceable . In the case of entrepreneurs , they remain in demand even after raising fees and prices . Just as the most successful brands differentiate themselves , so do the most successful people .
When you apply your most authentic and naturally fascinating traits , the world sees you at your best and you ’ re recognized for your accomplishments .
P : your book , how the World sees you , gives a step-by-step method to describe yourself in just two or three words , referred to as an anthem for your personality . how can people use their tagline to benefit their personal brand ? H : My Anthem , for example , is “ Fascinating Communication ”. “ Fascinating ” is the adjective that describes how I am different

favorite interview question : Is “ Hogshead ” your real name ? yes , my last name really is hogshead . Sometimes people think it ’ s a fake name or stage name . When i was growing up , i was teased and bullied on the playground because of my last name . i went into my mom , Mrs . hogshead , and said , “ why can ’ t we just have a normal last name , mom ? like Jones ?” My mother said something i ’ ll never forget : “ it ’ s the thing about you that makes you different that will one day make you love it , the thing about your name that makes it different will one day make you love it ,” and that was the start of learning today how those qualities that make you different are what make people love you .
greatest role model : i ’ d have to say my brother and sister , andy and nancy , are my role models . When i was a little girl , my brother graduated from harvard and my sister won 3 gold medals and 1 silver at the 1984 Summer olympics , so it was hard not to be influenced and also a little intimidated by their successes !
favorite day-off activity : i love to be able to spend time at our beach house in new Smyrna . Spending quality family time together is the best medicine to recharge my batteries .
favorite spa treatment : Massage and pedicure . With traveling so much for speeches , i love to be able to unwind and have those knots worked out and of course living in orlando , i ’ m constantly in sandals and can ’ t have those little piggies looking anything but manicured to perfection ! not to mention i love to express myself through my polish — we recently took a family vacation to Costa rica and i had their flag recreated on my toes … how ’ s that for a fascinating pedicure !
Most interesting place she ’ s been : When i was studying women ’ s studies at Duke university , i lived with a family for a short time in dung hut in a small village between Kenya and ethiopia . in this tribe they ’ d never seen a white woman , they ’ d never heard of flash photography , they ’ d never heard western music . and on average they had 13 children per family . you can imagine how the women in this situation could be so disempowered . i took away from my time in africa that there is a need for us to empower people so that they at least have a voice , and that when women don ’ t have a voice , they learn boring . When they can ’ t put themselves out there , the world is denied the opportunity to learn from them .
favorite app : i ’ m currently loving anything that increases productivity .
favorite song : i have a very eclectic taste in music , and everything will make an appearance in the shuffle . however , when i ’ m in creative writing mode , like when i ’ m working on a manuscript , i will settle on one track and set it on repeat .
