Culture: Saudi society has experienced tremendous developments over the past several years, but women's rights still need progress in comparison to other Islamic countries.
Economics: Saudi Arabia has signed deals to purchase American military equipment worth $350 billion over 10 years, $110 billion immediately.
Politics: Saudi Arabia hosted 3 US-Arab Islamic summits from May 20 to May 21 in Riyadh. Leaders and representatives from 55 Muslim countries were among the attendees, but Syria and Iran were not. President Trump was also present, on his first overseas trip as President.
Culture: During the 2017 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, Mali beat Ghana 1-0, maintaining their defense of the title.
Economics: Despite the decline in global oil prices and recent OPEC crises, Ghana's economy is not expected to be largely impacted. Ghana is a net importer of oil.
Politics: President Akufo-Addo, a former human rights lawyer who took office in January, recently visited Liberia and Mali, in efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) relations.
Culture: Upon receiving an award at the World Values Network Annual Gala in New York, President Kagame declared that, “Hatred can never be justified.”
Economics: Financial institutions in Rwanda plan to lower interest rates in order to strengthen the business sector therein, particularly the private sector.
Politics: The presidential election will occur on August 4, 2017. Current president Paul Kagame, seeks a third term after the approval of constitutional changes. He has been president since 2000, and his actions have been highly criticized by both the US and the European Union.
