EARLIER THIS SPRING , internationally renowned workplace belonging expert and bestselling author Smiley Poswolsky joined the ISPA community in an online town hall event where he touched on the rapid changes to the work environment since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic . In the SpaSoft-sponsored event moderated by ISPA Chair Patrick Huey , Smiley shared his insights and expertise on workplace disruptions and how to engage employees , reduce burnout and encourage team interactions .
GENERATION Z IN THE WORKPLACE One of the challenges in the workplace today is mastering generational talent . Generation Z does not know a world without smartphones and having instant answers . Currently , over half of the workforce is made up of Millennials and Gen Z individuals .“ When hiring , it has to be fast , timely and personal ,” Poswolsky said .“ In today ’ s world , an individual can do so much in a few minutes with their fingertips . When they go to get a career , they can ’ t understand why it takes so long .
“ As the person interviewing those individuals , we need to meet them where they are with timely recruitment .”
Generation Z focuses on the importance of flexibility , according to Smiley . Specifically , they seek flexibility in terms of navigating their career with the freedom of what they are working on and who they are working with . Smiley shared with the Town Hall audience that Gen Z employees also demand diversity , expect more accountability and transparency , and seek a culture built on mental health and wellness .
THE POWER OF GENERATIONAL COLLABORATION Smiley believes more can always be accomplished when you work together and collaborate .“ Pair ‘ early talent ’ with folks with decades more experience to lead projects together ,” he advised .“ This helps show the younger generation how much they have to learn in their career , while also showing the older generation that the younger generation has great ideas and are the future of the industry .”
