my colleagues ( who often use my incorrect pronouns ) and my ‘ all-gender ’ uniform is labeled “ men ’ s spa .” I ’ ve seen so much change within my workplace , but there ’ s definitely more to be done .
Overall , the largest hurdle in my workplace — and in many other spas — is the gendered spaces and systems we operate within . At my location , for instance , you may not visit the lounges , facilities or treatment rooms without first stepping into men ’ s or women ’ s changing rooms . This poses a challenge to any trans or non-binary employee or guest entering the spa .
Without capital expenditure and renovations , these challenges will persist . However , until this investment can occur , we can still include others through our interactions . Providing trans and non-binary guests with realistic expectations of their experience in a caring way shows
that you ’ ve taken the time to consider their presence in your establishment .
P : Can you give an example of a time when you felt accepted or included in your workplace ? What was done by the employer or co-workers to make you feel that way ?
K : I feel most valued when my coworkers make an effort to use my correct pronouns and when members of my hotel leadership team actively question current policy and seek my expertise and advice on administrative changes and standardized operating procedures . Before I told my leadership team that I was transgender , I felt as though I was living two lives — one entirely separate from my work persona . It was my spa leaders who created the space for me to feel safe and grow together . It ’ s been an often challenging , but very rewarding , experience .
