Within my family circle, my other name is“ The Determined Deb”— a moniker inspired after my driven and adventurous grandmother. Losing her mother at a young age, my grandmother and her six siblings lived a difficult childhood, separated from each other and passed onto different foster homes. But she was one tough, determined woman who pursued an education for herself and a career in teaching and social work, a path not traditionally taken by women of her generation.

My most vivid memory of her strength as a woman and her youthful spirit was when she was 86 years old and still insisted on volunteering at a community nursing home because, in her own words,“ Those elderly people needed her help.”
Don’ t we all have strong women in our lives who inspire us to become“ women of strength” as well? This Pulse issue is all about that. It celebrates women in the spa industry who, in their own ways, leave a lasting impression to those who look up to them. It recognizes brands and companies that empower women around the world and believe that providing fair wages or financial independence to mothers directly impacts an entire family and community that depend on a mother’ s nurturing love. Above all, this Pulse issue brings into light the spa industry’ s power to become a global catalyst of change.
As the spa industry continues to evolve and becomes increasingly competitive, there is an opportunity for women to become more recognized as business leaders. ISPA provides many business tools and research to assist everyone to build their body of knowledge in this area. In addition, as we continue to form a bridge between spa, health care, wellness and other related industries, there will be new challenging career choices for women emerging.
As we empower women within the industry, we also inspire our predominantly women consumer in the process. As spas truly embrace the wellness concept, they will continue to find spas as a place of refuge, recharging and learning— to help them not only manage the stress of the many roles they play in today’ s society but give them the tools necessary to strive for their personal goals both professionally and personally.
Let this be a call of challenge to us all within the spa industry who have the ability and responsibility to impact lives. Uplift other women in your team to become leaders. Think beyond revenue to empower the less fortunate. Be a woman of strength to others.
