WHAT inspires YOU? COMPILED BY CARRIE FAY AND FARON CLIFFORD Inspire—it is a powerful word that can ignite stories, provoke ideas and stir emotions. It is only fitting that the 2012 ISPA Conference & Expo takes on the “Inspire” theme as the event itself has become a place to recharge one’s creativity and reconnect with inspiring people in the industry. So, to celebrate this year’s the me, Pulse asks: What inspires you? “A s an 11-year-old boy, I first fell in love with the guitar. It is a relationship that has provided endless inspiration. Whether I’m playing some mellow James Taylor or the mighty Van Halen [songs], it reminds me to approach life with passion, harmony and attitude!” Eric Stephenson, LMT Director, Massage Education • imassage, Inc. Delray Beach, Florida “M y inspiration comes from daily meditation and great books! My latest book is The Diamond Cutter by Geshe Michael Roach and Lama Christie McNally. It is based on Buddha principles of business strategies, keeping your creative mind clear, and how to enjoy a successful work place. Truly a great read!” Jane Nelson Owner/Managing Member • SolReya Boise, Idaho “I just finished creating our new menu of treatments and it is so inspiring to learn new things in our trainings. It is a good reminder that there is always room for growth and inspiration! Personally, [I am inspired by] the audio book Imagine: How Creativity Works by Jonah Lehrer. I just finished [listening to the last audio book CD which is] a great book to make you think differently about how you structure your organization.” “I am inspired by the exploding wellness sector of spa. Health care is radically changing and I truly believe that merging the world of spa into the wellness industry is a game-changing health care solution. We are on the tip of a US$2 trillion wellness industry iceberg and the spa industry is poised to take great advantage of this amazing opportunity. Medical research now provides evidencebased documentation that massage, acupuncture, lifestyle classics, immersion treatments, etc. can and do change or enhance your state of health. This is [at] the heart of my passion.” Suzie Foote, CSS, BSN RN Healthy Pathway Coordinator • The Spa at St. Dominic’s Hospital Jackson, Mississippi “O f all things, I have found inspiration in the trending online service, pinterest.com (http://pinterest.com/azspagirls/). Years ago, I created a vision board at Mii amo. And while I love it and glance at it often, Pinterest takes vision boarding to a whole new, dynamic level. Pinboards visually capture your style, your dreams and things make you laugh or inspire creativity. Pinning is believing.“ Lisa Kasanicky Founder • Arizona Spa Girls Scottsdale, Arizona Candis Ayers Spa Director • St Julien Hotel & Spa Boulder, Colorado (CONTINUED ON PAGE 40) 38 PULSE ■ July 2012
