As we start a new calendar year, do you ever wonder— what does“ new” mean? Webster’ s dictionary defines“ new” as:“ changed for the better,”“ rejuvenated,”“ just discovered,”“ still fresh,”“ different from the former,”“ inexperienced” and“ currently fashionable.”
Knowing these different meanings makes me reflect on a new year a little differently than before. Rather than try to stick to silly New Year’ s resolutions, why not approach the New Year as a time to rejuvenate and be grateful?
For me, I am grateful that 2012 was filled with good health, many happy memories and proud moments of celebration. And as I get older and approach BIG birthdays, I also recognize the circle of life— the unexpected( and unexplainable) tragic loss of loved ones and the just plain“ tough stuff.” These many fleeting and powerful everyday memories that we carry around make us who we are and shape us into who we will become.
So, let’ s all be brave in 2013 and embrace the New Year as simply“ different from the former” and approach this year knowing it will be our best year ever! I plan on taking what I learned in the past year and applying it in 2013 so I can truly become“ changed for the better.” I think we can all agree— as Deborah Szekely has taught us— no matter our age, we are“ still fresh” and most definitely“ currently fashionable.”
In this New Year, how are you going to define the new you? What attitude will you have as you journey through 2013?
