FROM THE CHAIRMAN HELLO ISPA! B y the time you read this, all of the gifts will have been given, parties will be over, and life will pretty much be back to normal. This gets me thinking about the New Year, resolutions for the future, and our quest for happiness and meaning. It strikes me at this time of year that, in order to achieve our goals, we often think that a pricey purchase can change our habits. Maybe an expensive treadmill will just be the thing to encourage us to get up every morning and run. Or perhaps a highend set of cookware is what we need to inspire us to cook nutritious home-cooked meals. We often purchase things, not because we need them, but because they embody the “other person” that we want to be. Truth is, these things most often don’t change our habits and rarely bring us happiness. What I’ve seen work best, both as a trainer and as a person who clocks way too many hours in the office but still wants to fit in my skinny jeans, is developing one good habit at a time—and building on each success to get me where I need to go. It takes about a month to develop a habit. So, instead of overwhelming your selfPHOTO © TIFFANY BROWN control by deciding to do everything at once—eating right, exercising, practicing yoga, and finally giving up diet soda—because it’s the resolution-month of January, pick one thing to develop into a consistent habit, then move on to the next. By doing this, you will be more successful and feel better about yourself and more likely to move on to your next goal. And about those expensive purchases to help you get there? Studies show that things rarely make us happy. Experiences, on the other hand, change us. Aren’t you glad then that you are in the experience business and in a position to spread more happiness? —ELLA STIMPSON, ISPA CHAIRMAN ® 2013 ISPA BOARD OF DIRECTORS OFFICERS DIRECTORS CHAIRMAN Ella Stimpson Wynn and Encore Las Vegas Sharilyn Abbajay Abbajay Collection, LLC VICE CHAIRMAN Michael Tompkins Miraval Resort & Spa SECRETARY/TREASURER Todd Walter Red Door Spas 2 PULSE ■ Kristi M.
