“ Sometimes we take on a journey; sometimes the journey takes us.”
— ERIC SAPERSTON
Like some of you planning to welcome 2011 with a list of resolutions, I find myself standing at the fork of the road deciding how best to take my journey with you all as your new ISPA chairman.
Still reeling from the success of Conference last November, I am inspired to start the year fresh by rolling out a plan of action towards reaching the goals and vision of the association.
The road to execution of these goals won’ t be bump-free, but— having taken Marcus Buckingham’ s mantra to heart— I am inspired to start each task with“ strengths first.”
Our strength as an association is in our united voice. For years, we rallied to get the message of spa’ s health benefits across the globe. Today, we are beginning to see the shift of consumer consciousness to live the spa lifestyle.
I also see our strength, being our greatest area of opportunity, as a means to shape our community not only through our economic contributions, but also through our philanthropic initiatives.
The 2010 ISPA Alex Szekely Humanitarian recipient Doc Hendley said:“ You have such an opportunity to make a difference if you just take that first step.”
This call to action resonates deep in me since I strongly believe that, as an industry anchored on“ care and human touch,” we should be among the firsts to give. In fact, it still warms my heart today to think of us— some with a glass of good cabernet in hand— gathered in the Auction room last Conference, so willing to spend for the benefit of the ISPA Foundation.
And while we plan to go full speed ahead in implementing strategic plans to further strengthen ISPA’ s global presence, I don’ t plan to hit full throttle all the time. Instead, reminded by Eric Saperston’ s story of journey, I will try to slow down every now and then as I cruise on my own“ station wagon” to allow myself to reflect on my journey and build relationships along the way.
I imagine the ride to be fun, adventurous and full of life lessons. I urge you then, take that first step with me— let’ s hop on the metaphorical wagon and explore together.
Enjoy the journey,
