“ Cultivating Well-Being ” was held between Dr . Roizen and Richard Davidson , PhD , Founder and Director of the Center for Healthy Minds . What happens in the human brain when a person reaches a state of wellbeing is still being studied , but it is clear that there are positive effects and that these effects are within our control to develop . Dr . Roizen believes that we should consider the cultivation of wellbeing as a basic need , noting that loneliness carriers a higher risk factor for mortality than obesity does . Humans can cultivate these processes through procedural learning , acquired through practice . Dr . Davidson shared that as little as six minutes per day is enough to learn a valuable stress-relieving technique , just a little more time than we spend brushing our teeth each day .
All of these broad-ranging discussions introduced or expanded upon ideas that will no doubt continue to be vital parts of the discussion about all the ways in which wellness will continue to be a greater and greater focus of everyone from large companies to individual consumers . Spa leaders , of course , are also among that number , and as wellness continues to be at the center of our culture in this ( new ) new era , they and their businesses promise to play a significant role in helping the population make it a larger and larger part of their daily lives . ■
