WOMEN ’ S HEALTH Women ’ s health issues were well-represented at several sessions , including the panel ,“ The Economic Impact of Investing in Women ’ s Health ,” which was moderated by Carolee Lee , chief executive officer and founder of Women ’ s Health Access Matters ( WHAM ) and featured panelists Dr . Robynne Chutkan , founder of the Digestive Center for Wellness , and Suzanne Steinbaum , president and chief executive officer of Cadence .
The panel discussed data from a WHAM report titled “ The Case to Fund Women ’ s Health Research : An Economic and Societal Impact Analysis ,” which showed that though women comprise 50 percent of the workforce , are responsible for 85 percent of spending and make 80 percent of healthcare decisions , they remain underrepresented in healthcare studies ; in fact , the National Institutes of Health only started including women in clinical research after an act of congress in 1993 . Yet women are more than twice as likely as men to suffer from depression or develop Alzheimer ’ s disease .
