What’s the deal with Twitter trends? It’s well known that the most oft-discussed hashtags and topics are collected by Twitter, then shown on the trends list so that you can stay up to date on what’s being talked about. Brands frequently used to attempt to “newsjack” these trending topics by monitoring them and forcing the hashtag or phrase into a tweet, all in the hopes of going viral; however, this isn’t a wise strategy these days. You can, of course, plan for some of these trends, like #MondayMotivation, #TuesdayThoughts, #WednesdayWisdom, etc., as well as some notable days in the industry like #NationalRelaxationDay, #GlobalWellnessDay, and others, and have your content planned and scheduled well ahead of time. For the most part, though, if it feels forced to jump in on a trending phrase, it probably is—and users will know it. Feel free to monitor the discussion and jump in if it truly applies to your brand and you have something worthwhile to say, but it’s typically best to steer clear.
