NEARLY EVERY INDUSTRY is enduring some manner of staffing challenges at the moment , and the spa industry — as we ’ ve documented frequently in recent issues of Pulse — is no different . These challenges have led businesses in a wide variety of sectors to introduce creative new benefits and initiatives ( or simply embrace traditional benefits they had been slow to adopt ) in order to improve their recruitment and retention efforts . In the June 2021 ISPA Snapshot Survey , we asked spa and resource partner members to share data on hiring , benefits , compensation and employment to paint a clearer picture of how businesses in the spa industry are addressing these vital issues .
When asked to name the benefits that they use to attract new employees during the hiring process , just over a third ( 34 percent ) reported offering retention bonuses awarded to staff after a specific number of days employed , while more than a quarter ( 27 percent ) said they offer an immediate signing bonus to new hires . Meanwhile , staff at 27 percent of spas surveyed enjoy complimentary spa treatments as a perk of their employment , and 32 percent of respondents said their spas provide complimentary meals during workdays . Though a growing number of businesses now offer a daily
pay option rather than the typical bi-weekly or semi-monthly options , just two percent of spa respondents reported offering daily pay . Perhaps most interestingly , 24 percent of spa respondents noted that they don ’ t offer any of the benefits detailed above .
Resource partner respondents differed significantly from their spa counterparts , with 77 % indicating that they do not offer any of these less traditional benefits . However , 14 percent of resource partners did say that they offer retention bonuses to employees after a certain number of days onboard .
