I would like to take a moment to share with our readers my pride in the staff and physicians who work daily to provide excellent patient care to our community. This commitment to excellence was recently validated by a number of national and local organizations, which recognize quality patient care. Torrance Memorial has been ranked as one of the best hospitals for 201314 in California and the Los Angeles metro area for the second year in a row by U.S. News & World Report, placing the hospital in the top 6% in the state. Additionally, the medical center received an “A” rating for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit, and a Gold Award from the American Heart Association for the treatment of both stroke and heart failure. The Torrance Memorial Hunt Cancer Institute earned the coveted Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer—one of only 75 U.S. healthcare facilities to do so. And the medical center’s Transitional Care Unit received an overall quality rating of five stars (the highest possible) from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, putting it among the top 10% of skilled nursing facilities nationwide. I am also proud to recognize the extremely unique and highly skilled work of our Burn Center team. Last month the unit was named a verified center by the American Burn Association and Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons—one of only two verified Burn Centers in Los Angeles County. Lastly and equally important is the vote given to us by our own community when we received South Bay’s Best Hospital by Daily Breeze readers. Congratulations to our outstanding team!
