her personal attitudes towards its inception. ‘I was 22
when I started it and still working as a naked model
myself. I was frustrated with the way models were
treated.’ And not just by sleazy Craigslist private hires,
men that Crabapple and her professionally naked
associates dubbed GWCs, or ‘Guys With Cameras.’ In
the introduction to Colouring Book, she explains why
she especially hated posing for art classes: ‘In Art’s
quest for professionalism, the teachers took warm,
naked bodies and made them sterile as platonic
solids. I’d rather be a pair of tits than an octagon. And
I’d rather be a whole person than a pair of tits.’
Getting the concept of an art-positive burlesque
fiesta off the ground without money took its
toll on the artist. ‘I feel like I didn’t sleep for years
when I was setting it up. It was brutal work.’ Yet
Crabapple’s persistence saw Dr. Sketchy’s expanding
internationally within a year. ‘It started catching on
in the summer of 2006. I had no money, and so was
advertising it by spamming illustrators’ Livejournal
groups. A woman in Melbourne saw it and wanted
to start her own branch. She still runs it to this day.’
It never stopped growing. By 2009, the franchise had
expanded to include 40 branches. Crabapple began
