? When looking at Yu’s work, it is clear that he
cultivates each one in the same manner that he
treats his garden at home. Paint has been liberally
added, scraped away, and added again, until the
artist is satisfied with the outcome. The results are
a set of intense and atmospheric canvases that
exude the artist’s energy. Yu is the most established
of the three artists here. His compositions emulate
Chinese shanshui painting, but the figures that
inhabit these landscapes are straight out of the
Western expressionist tradition, reminding the
viewer of Matisse’s genre defining nude drawings.
This hybrid style, mixing guohua sensibilities and
Western motifs, have seen his works featured in
major galleries across the world.
? Meanwhile, Huang Ziyang’s abstract paintings
utilize three basic strokes applied across the canvas.
Using ink on rice paper or silk, Huang applies the
brushstrokes in a uniform manner, before breaking
the rhythmic patterns by switching direction. The
resulting works bristle with energy, giving the
effect of static electricity. If you look long enough,
you can see the outlines of landscapes revealing
themselves. ‘You can see his technique become
more refined with each successive canvas, but
his style has certainly become more chaotic,’ says
