September 2016 . It ' s a fitting location for Dobbs , whose grandmother Sircle Moore Ping was well known for her pies in several local restaurants like McBrides near the Southern Railway depot and Phelps ' Diner downtown in the 1950 and 60s .
Ping ' s recipes have been incorporated into the Downtown Deli menu — now made by Dobbs ' mother , who ' s affectionately nicknamed Tooter .
" Tooter Pies " — in varieties such as butterscotch , chocolate , peanut butter , coconut and lemon — are a house favorite .
" We don ' t cut corners on meringue ," Dobbs noted .
Open from 9 a . m . to 3 p . m . Monday through Friday , Downtown Deli has some breakfast offerings but primarily features daily specials designed to attract repeat lunch customers .
" Everybody looks forward to Tuesday and our meatloaf ," Dobbs said . Other favorites include the chili cheese dogs of " Wiener Wednesdays ," burgers and chicken salad . The restaurant also offers affordable , homey fare made from the freshest ingredients available .
" Everything ' s home made ," Dobbs said . " When summer comes , I utilize all the local farmers ."
Downtown Deli will open during special events downtown such as Somernites Cruise , the city ' s quarterly festivals and the annual Christmas Parade , which is sponsored by the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce .
