Notes and aquarium experience:
A beautiful unique looking cichlid, that looks better
in the flesh rather than in photos. The fish has a
beautiful white overall body colour with subtle pink
or green iridescence in different lighting conditions.
The body will have extensive black peppery dots all
over which extend into the operculum area and the
unpaired fins and caudal. The black markings around
the head region and body are displayed under
different mood conditions. Old or dominate males
develop a large nuchal hump, this usually develops
around 2years.
They aren’t a particularly shy cichlid and can be-
come the dominate species within a large cichlid
community. They seem much more outgoing and
aggressive than Vieja regani. Mixing with conspe-
cifics should only be done in very large aquariums.
Small Thorichthys sp. and medium sized cichlids like
exCichlasoma salvini make good combinations. Sex-
ual dimorphism in young and sub adult fish is weak.
Males are larger than females and display more
flowing unpaired fins, however female fish can
boast long flowing fins too. Males will develop more
black peppery dots on the body, which appears to
lack in female specimens. Females are sometimes
noted to display a faint black blotch on the dorsal,
this I believe will be displayed when spawning?
