Walks – Levadas
Levada is the name given to an irrigation
canal or aqueduct flanked by a pedestrian
path, specific to the island of Madeira,
Portugal. They are also called channeled to
the usually smaller canals that carry water to
the water mills.
In Madeira, the origin of the levadas was due
to the need to bring large amounts of water
from the north-facing slopes, where the
easiest dwelling abounds to the south side of
the island and where most of the plantations
have always been , in particular sugar cane.
Levadas began to be built in the 16th
century, and the most recent ones date from
the
1940s, supplying water for hydroelectric
power plants as well as for irrigation purposes.
