INVESTIGATIONS Audio Evidence - Full Courses Several variations of a full-day course on audio-related topics are available and customizable to suit your training needs. Equipment is provided, and agency equipment can also be used to train on. Audio Evidence Devices and Collection Audio evidence is crucial in many, if not all, narcotics investigations today. Audio provides the actual words of the offenders and assists in pleas and convictions and also assists in maintaining the safety of an undercover officer or confidential informant. Understanding body wires, antennas, and repeaters can be confusing and as a result, getting good quality audio can be challenging. This course will present the basic principles that if followed will improve the quality of audio transmissions and evidence in undercover operations. This course will highlight all aspects of audio evidence from recording telephone calls to setting up repeaters and antennas covertly and will demonstrate how easy it is to create low-cost antennas for undercover and surveillance vehicles that can significantly improve surveillance operations. This course can be customized for content and length of time. Generally, the course length is 2 to 4 hours for an overview course. Basic Cell Phone Investigation This two-day course is designed for investigators with limited experience with investigations involving cellular devices or for persons planning to be assigned to investigations that are capable of quickly learning technical investigative topics. This course will cover all the major aspects of investigations involving cellular devices. The course will introduce several real-world cases to be used as practical learning exercises. Attendees will be operating independently and in small investigative groups. This course is geared more toward information obtained from cellular providers and third-parties like Google, Facebook, etc. This is not a cellular forensics course, however, data derived from cellular devices using Cellebrite and other devices will be discussed and incorporated into the course. Basic Electronics and Troubleshooting Narcotics units are generally the biggest user of law enforcement surveillance equipment, however many of the basic principles of batteries and electronics are not taught or known and result in confusion why a device is not functioning properly. The result is avoidance or under-utilization of equipment or worse, damaging of equipment. This course will highlight the most common type of surveillance equipment used today such as GPS devices, covert audio equipment, covert video equipment, cables, connectors, and batteries. Basic features and uses of a multi-meter will be covered as well. This course can be presented as a hands-on class with multi-meters and test boards or a presentation only format. Size and length of time are adjusted to the type of course and number of attendees. This course is customizable from 2 to 8 hours. 10 Basic Search Warrant Writing and Execution This course is designed to familiarize officers with preparing and executing search warrants. Instructors will discuss what information is required in the search warrant and affidavit, and the procedure for signing, based on jurisdiction and type of warrant. Instructors will provide templates for various types of search warrants for students to personalize and the legal issues for each will be discussed. Students will receive hands-on training in residential warrant execution to include scouting, briefing, and tactical clearing. Behavioral and Statement Analysis This one-day training on behavioral and statement analysis focuses on the verbal and non-verbal leakage of truth and deceptive behavior. You will learn how to recognize and understand how the body leaks information and uncovers the truth. Human behavior and language are in our DNA. This training will help you tap into the intriguing world of deception. You will be able to identify if someone is being deceptive based upon their subtle body language, micro-expressions, and the verbiage they choose. This is fascinating as the person is not even aware that he or she is providing these deceptive cues. Cellular Devices and Provider Data: The Key in the Lock of Investigations This course will focus on the following four areas of cellular devices and provider data: • Mobile device forensics – there are more forensic tools than just the one you are using Cellular provider data and services - how to get everything available for the investigation Investigative analysis tools – tools available to the investigator to find the evidence Investigative resources – where to go for help when you need it • • • Cellular Device Locating and Tracking Cellular device locating, or Pinging, cellular devices has become an acceptable and valuable tool for all law enforcement but most often is used by law enforcement in narcotics cases. This course will cover what providers can provide and what is necessary to obtain the location information sought. It will also highlight what can be done with the information as well as resources available to improve on the information obtained from the providers. Ping data can be combined with other investigative data such as GPS and Pen Register data and analyzed to provide more intelligence and leads on your cases. Covert Antenna Building Workshop Attendees will build a highly functional covert dipole antenna tuned to their agency’s body wire and repeater frequencies that can be installed in the bumper of a surveillance or undercover vehicle, or inside the vehicle as a covert coat hanger antenna, for repeater or receiver use. Instructions and resources on how to build a variety of antennas will be covered. There are material costs of approximately $7.00 per antenna made and class size should not be larger than 35 – 40 people. This course is best done in a 3-4-hour time slot.
