Community Response Teams This course is designed to help community leaders create a community member program in their community. Conducting Successful Community Notifications on Registered Sex Offenders This course will cover the sex offender community notification laws and ways to effectively communicate that information to your community. The instructor will also address strategies for conducting successful community notification meetings, how to use flyers effectively, and juvenile offender information. House of Worship Safety and Security Symposium As we all know, worship locations are supposed to be sanctuaries of peace and a place for us to reflect and repent, however lately there has been a shift. Attacks on worship locations are becoming more and more prevalent, one of the most effective ways to respond to these threats is to get organized, have a plan and consider ways to better secure your facility and its most valuable asset – your people! Each year the college hosts the Annual Wisconsin House of Worship Safety and Security Symposium where attendees range from church leaders to law enforcement who come together to learn from others on how we can detect and deter these threats in addition to reacting in the event we are faced with one. Municipal Code Enforcement This course involves lectures, case studies, group projects, and hands- on activities. The student will learn about ordinance enforcement, including responding to complaints, proper investigation of code violations, building a case file, serving inspection warrants and the presentation of evidence in court. The process involved in drafting new ordinances to address chronic problems in the community will also be presented. The class will be provided with case studies and will apply the skills learned to a final scenario. Media Strategies for Law Enforcement Public safety agencies and the media have had a long and storied history. Given the very nature of our profession, it is invariable that we will be the focus of a news story - some good and some not so good. This class will cover tips and strategies on how to manage these news stories and critical incidents as well as methods to get reporters to cover the positive happenings at your agency. The course will also feature a panel discussion with various media representatives, so students can learn directly from them on what they are seeking. Humane Officer This course will offer real accounts of humane officer work and will discuss crimes such as dogfighting, hoarding, neglect, and abuse. Topics include the basics of taking evidence photographs and basic report writing, when an animal can be removed from a property, and how to recognize various forms of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Live, Love, Serve: Understanding the Public Safety Profession This course is designed to help new & veteran officers, students, and family members understand the complex profession of a career in law enforcement and will help them gain a better understanding of the pitfalls that are not always taught in most police recruit academies. Topics covered include post-traumatic stress disorder, shiftwork, harassment from other officers, ethics, traumatic crime scenes, personal relationships, substance abuse, field training, coping mechanisms for stressors, finances, divorce, on-duty police deaths, the debriefing process, suicide, and many more. This course is also built in conjunction with helping families and loved ones gain insight into “My Cop” and helps them see what we as officers are going through before it happens. This is a class that is a roller coaster of emotions. You may cry, you will laugh, and at times, topics will be very serious. We will discuss the negative aspects of a career in law enforcement, but also celebrate what a truly wonderful profession this is.
