If an area of brain tissue is even partially deprived of optimally effective cerebrospinal fluid motion and flow, that brain area will be forced into some degree of functional compromise.5

Without proper circulatory or lymphatic flow, cellular functioning is compromised and can potentially cause any number of sensory, motor, or neurological disabilities.6

My father tells me I’ve got it wrong. He says that stuff does not belong in patient charts. He says if there was anything personal he needed to remember he’d jot it on a Post-It note and stick it to the file.

I’m killing myself in all that water but I can’t stop.

Under all that water, all that weight, at last, a tiny bit of quiet, a place to rest the mind, still plumbing forward from the shoulders, from the hips.

The silence is sorrow but gorgeous, unlike the ocean, which roughs and shoves and doesn’t care.

I think about all this in the water, while the competitive swimmers just getting out of practice begin to gather in the hot tub.

I admire them, as I admire all athletes, for their discipline. I draw strength from their own strong bodies and push on.

Just a few more laps to go.
