had become as turbulent as Jupiter. All day the lone astronaut walked across the division between night and day, up the terrae and down the maria, always following the far away planet, a lost satellite of his own, but like some cruel dream the planet never got any closer, and once the landscape started looking familiar he decided to do something else for a while.

He camped out by the flag embedded in the dust for a couple of weeks, sat against its pole and watched the universe move around him, trying to imagine what it must have been like for the pioneers of a bygone generation, the sudden intimate relationship to the otherwise inaccessible cosmos. But now here he was, out there among them, and all he wanted
