Arrive alive: Driver safety during holiday season
The Office of Emergency Management is proud to share the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles( FLHSMV) and Florida Highway Patrol’ s( FHP) Arrive Alive campaign. This seasonal initiative reminds Floridians that safety never takes a holiday.
Running through the end of the year, FLHSMV, FHP and public safety partners urge all drivers to stay alert, follow traffic laws and make responsible choices so everyone can get home safely.
Key safety messages
• Reckless driving: Behaviors like tailgating, speeding, failing to yield or running red lights remain leading causes of crashes and fatalities statewide. Defensive driving saves lives.
• Impaired driving: One in three traffic deaths in Florida involves an impaired driver. Alcohol, drugs and even certain prescription medications can slow reaction time and impair judgment. Driving under the influence carries severe consequences: fines, license suspension, jail time and a conviction that stays on record for 75 years.
• Seatbelt use: Buckling up is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself. Florida law requires seatbelts or child restraints for drivers, front-seat passengers and all passengers younger than 18. Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of serious injury or death in a crash by nearly 50 %.
• Distracted diving: A crash occurs every 44 seconds in Florida, often because of distractions. Texting, eating, adjusting navigation or even conversations can take attention off the road. Drivers should keep their eyes, hands and minds focused on driving, while passengers can help minimize distractions.
With more vehicles on Florida’ s roads during the holiday season, safe driving is more important than ever. By slowing down, staying sober, buckling up and eliminating distractions, motorists can ensure that safety is always in season.
