Planning & Zoning accepts award for Pioneer Park, The Port District
Pioneer Park and The Port District were awarded the Greatest Places in Florida People ' s Choice Award by the American Planning Association Florida Chapter. The award was presented to the Planning and Zoning director in September at the annual conference in Daytona Beach.
The 9.75-acre parcel, located just south of the Botanical Gardens, is a vibrant destination along the banks of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.
It boasts a boardwalk that links three parks and two retail centers, providing pedestrian access to recreation; nature preserves; shopping and dining; an overwater stage; canoe and kayak launch; versatile open-air event spaces; public seating areas; renovated historic homes; an inclusive children ' s playground; and soon, riverfront dining. There is public art throughout the site with more to come upon completion of the restaurant.
After many years of gathering public input, Planning and Zoning worked alongside the Community Redevelopment Agency, Parks and Recreation, other City staff and consultants, and with input from residents, created The Port District Master Plan that laid the foundation for the district and the award.
