On July 2, Detective Wegner presented the victim of a SIM swapping case with a check for $ 96,400 that he was able to recover from a sum that scammers had stolen.
The case involved a cell phone company authorizing a scammer who called in to swap phones linked to the account( SIM swapping). The victim ' s phone information was swapped from his current phone to the scammer ' s phone.
The scammer was able to obtain personal account information and transfer funds which totaled $ 195,000 in losses. Partial funds were traced to accounts which were identified and frozen with assistance from the bank’ s fraud department.
The victim provided a statement:“ I am grateful to the Port St. Lucie Police Department for all the work they have done on my behalf. I want to thank Detective Wegner for all the progress made on my case and the recovery that was made. His communication with me throughout this matter has been helpful.”
SIM swapping is a type of fraud where scammers trick a mobile carrier into transferring a victim ' s phone number to a new SIM card in the scammer ' s possession. This allows the scammer to intercept calls, texts and even security codes sent via SMS, potentially gaining access to the victim ' s bank accounts, email, social media and other online accounts.
