Remembering those who served
The City of Port St. Lucie welcomed residents, veterans, elected officials and community leaders to Veterans Memorial Park on May 25, for its annual Memorial Day Service honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States.
The ceremony brought the community together in remembrance and gratitude, recognizing the sacrifices made by generations of military service members and their families.
The service began with patriotic music performed by the Port St. Lucie Community Band under the direction of Dr. John Southall, followed by an invocation from Thomas Kennelly, U. S. Navy veteran and chaplain of American Legion Post 318. Mayor Shannon Martin welcomed attendees and reflected on the importance of Memorial Day as a time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation ' s freedoms.
Members of Vietnam Veterans Chapter 566 presented the colors, and attendees joined in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem. The program also featured an Armed Forces Medley and a community rendition of“ God Bless America” performed by the Port St. Lucie Community Band.
Retired U. S. Army Maj. Frank Castro of VFW Post 8058 served as the guest speaker, sharing reflections on the significance of Memorial Day and the enduring responsibility to remember and honor America ' s fallen heroes. Additional remarks were provided by retired U. S. Army Lt. Col. Manny Anon Jr., who introduced the guest speaker and recognized dignitaries and special guests in attendance.
One of the ceremony ' s most moving moments was the tribute to comrades lost during the past year, followed by the placement of wreaths and flowers by veterans and veterans service organizations. The solemn observance continued with a 21-gun rifle salute conducted by Marine Corps League Jack Ivy Detachment 666 and the resounding of taps, honoring those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
