2025 Hurricane Season Outlook
June 1 marked the start of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and it ' s crucial for residents to be prepared. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration( NOAA) has issued an aboveaverage forecast, predicting 13 to 19 named storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes( Category 3 or higher).
Tornadoes: Hurricanes can produce tornadoes with little warning, especially in the outer rainbands. These can occur far inland and cause significant damage. Knowing where to shelter is just as important as when to evacuate. All residents should:
While the exact path of storms are unpredictable, the likelihood of early-season activity is higher. We ask that residents be ready for the possibility of storms forming in early June and not wait until the official peak months of August and September.
While storm surge, flooding and wind damage are common hurricane threats, residents also should prepare for unexpected hazards:
• Identify a safe room in your home, ideally an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows( such as a closet or
bathroom).
• If you live in a mobile home or flood zone, plan ahead to relocate to a nearby shelter or a safer structure well before landfall.
Power outages and infrastructure disruptions: Extended outages may impact communications, transportation and access to emergency services.
Hazardous debris and contaminated water: After the storm passes, be aware of downed power lines, broken gas mains and floodwaters that may contain sewage or chemicals.
