City Council affirms plans, policies for future transportation needs in SW Port St. Lucie
City Council is addressing future transportation needs and important roadway connections as the City’ s population continues to grow.
At its Winter Workshop on Feb. 18, City Council approved recommendations from a transportation study of the southwestern portion of the City that was conducted in collaboration with the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council.
City Council’ s decisions include:
• Requiring developers to build the Hegener Drive / Paar Drive connection to Range Line Road, which will help reduce traffic in rapidly growing southwest Port St. Lucie.
• Supporting a future Marshall Parkway interchange at Interstate 95, which would ease congestion at the Gatlin Boulevard and Becker Road interchanges. The Florida Department of Transportation plans to study this interchange beginning in Fiscal Year 2026-27.
• Studying a developer-proposed connector road from Martin County to understand its impact on traffic, economic development and quality of life.
To make sure infrastructure is ready when new neighborhoods are built, City Council also adopted policies requiring developers to dedicate land for roads early, build roads sooner in the development process and allow the City to buy land for future roads, parks and other needs.
“ The City of Port St. Lucie relies on data to drive our decision making, especially when we are forecasting for the future,” said Mayor Shannon M. Martin.“ This transportation study allows us to plan for infrastructure demands – now and in the future – to best meet the needs of the community.
