Port St . Lucie receives Arbor Day Foundation awards
Helping extend the life of neighborhood roads with asphalt preservation
Public Works is overseeing the 2025 asphalt preservation projects that are anticipated to start in January , weather permitting .
The asphalt preservation program is designed to rejuvenate City roadways with reclamite emulsion , a penetrating sealer that helps protect asphalt from damage because of exposure to elements . Rejuvenation of approximately 42 centerline miles of roadway will begin soon .
The City of Port St . Lucie was recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation for being a Tree City USA for 20 years . To maintain this certification , the City must ensure proper care of trees , have a tree care ordinance , allocate a budget for tree care and observe and proclaim Arbor Day .
Additionally , the City has received the Growth Award for 19 consecutive years . This award recognizes a higher level of tree care , innovative programs and an increased commitment of resources for urban forestry .
The sealer has been used successfully on roadways since 1970 and meets or exceeds all EPA , federal , state , local and industry performance requirements . The roads selected are roadways paved in fiscal year 2020 and 2021 . This includes areas of St . Lucie North ; St . Lucie West ; Palm Trails ; Rosser Reserve ; Sandpiper Bay ; Sandhill Crossing ; Hidden Oaks ; and Crane Landing / Paar Estates .
The program helps reduce future repaving costs , saves taxpayers money , extends the life expectancy of a roadway and helps ensure a smooth ride on roadways for years to come .
The process requires a short application period and residents will always have access to their driveways . All cars parked on or near the roadway need to be moved between the hours of 7:30 a . m . and 5 p . m . and work cannot take place if it is raining . Residents on the identified roadways will be notified in advance . Follow construction signage and flagman when they are in your area and drive slowly over freshly treated areas .
