WORDS
FROM

WATSON
IIE Fellow
Past-Senior Vice President and Fellow
Institute of Industrial Engineers
1993 – 2013
It seems like just yesterday when we
held discussions in Pakistan about
the interest in developing a national
organization for promotion of the
profession of industrial engineering.
At that time I was Senior Vice
President of the Institute of Industrial
Engineers and was visiting Lahore,
Pakistan to deliver a key-note
address at the Quality and
Productivity Society of Pakistan. We
had a dinner meeting in the hotel just
before I had to depart and I was
strongly encouraged by the energy
of the students who were excited
about taking positive control of their
professional de-velopment and who
were committed to encouraging the
maturity of the industrial engineering
community within their nation.
I was pleased to get a report of the
establishment and advances of the
Pakistan Society of Industrial
Engineers (PSIE) from one of the
students who was instrumental in
setting up our dinner meeting, Azeem
Iqbal. He had written me to invite me
to join the students and discuss how
to go about establishing an
organization and then moving
forward by participating in the global
industrial engineering community. I
am proud of the progress that has
been made to date and wish to
encourage continued efforts in your
development.

In Japan there is an old saying:
“step-by-step walk the 1,000 mile
road.” Any human goal that is
worthwhile will require commitment,
dedication and perseverance. I offer
my personal best wishes for your
continuing efforts and hope that at
some time in the future I will be able
to return to Pakistan and see how a
dinner dream has grown in to a
vibrant reality.
