Now the frustrating part…… I was a very young kid who felt I had a bigger opportunity to do more in this business but I had very little support. Most of my successes were based on God’s blessings and a whole lot of luck. Most of the lack of support was from the record label who had limited funds to help me achieve greatness. We had limited recording budgets too. The big-time producers weren’t available to me, nor were great recording studios and engineers. We didn’t get preference over the artist signed directly to the label and it always seemed our projects were on the back burner. Our label was less than 24 months in existence when I was signed and our newly developed A&R team was only able to reach but so far. They too were limited in budgets to ensure we reached a much larger spectrum of potential listeners. It became obvious early on that I could only grow so much being tied to the genre of music I was involved in and the label I was committed to. I never did a video, a full album, merchandising, publicity campaigns or had a team of people around me who could manage getting me to another level. I never got paid for record sales, publishing or writing credit on any of my songs except for the first 1 ½ years I was signed and that was minimal monies. That was then, when Freestyle was at its peak and I was a kid. I have nothing but good memories and hold zero grudges to anyone involved in those days. Ultimately for all I was never given, I received 10 fold in experiences, life lessons and the feeling of relevance that can never be taken from me. Those are my treasures and are priceless. I do take credit for all the successes and lack thereof ever since. I’ve been a grown man for many years now and any failures I’ve had in my adult life can only be that of my own doing.
I’ve always had a sense of gratefulness and thanks to all my fans. I undyingly make time for anyone at any given time I may meet at a show or simply recognizes me and wants a picture. I take pride in the way I dress all the time and how I treat the fans and peers who listen and join me. I prefer to come early and stay late. Not always backstage but often mingling in a corner with the fans. I think the one thing that sets me apart from other artist is that EVERYTIME I walk out on stage and get the opportunity to sing to my fans, or take a picture, or sign an autograph; I do it like it was the very last time… everytime!
