What I see as a mark of success for the school board director is being able to lead the district forward , being able to understand what your administration is bringing to you so you can implement those policies and procedures to make your school district successful .

2021 PA Education Innovation Awards honorees announced

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RECIPIENTS of the Pennsylvania Education Innovation Awards ! The awards recognize innovative leadership in public school board governance , administration and teaching . A $ 1,000 award was given to the recipient or , in the case of the school board award , the district ’ s education foundation . Here are this year ’ s honorees :
Innovative School Leader :
Dr . Charles Herring , director of diversity , equity and inclusion , South Fayette Township School District
Dr . Herring is currently implementing an innovative collaboration among local colleges and universities in western PA to increase the number of teachers of color . Nominator Shallegra Moye , program director for the Center for Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh , said Herring is “ a fantastic advocate for diversity and inclusion work that positively impacts all students and staff he interacts with .”
Innovative Teacher Award :
Jeanine Ging , sixth grade science teacher , Freedom Area School District
Through several grants , Ging has provided the district with an outdoor classroom including several educational tools such as a greenhouse , a chicken coop and Monarch Garden Waystations , plus covered seating for a whole class . She incorporates the garden into the curriculum in new ways through hands-on activities . Lynn Patsiga , a school board director at the district that nominated Ging , noted that she is a “ star ” teacher who is “ innovative , passionate and dedicated to nurturing students .”
Innovative School Board :
Moniteau School District Board of Directors
The Moniteau School Board was honored for its comprehensive response to student needs facilitated by partnerships with local agencies and businesses . Through these partnerships , internet access has been provided to students throughout the pandemic , and the district was able to build a greenhouse and donate produce grown by students to the area food bank . A school director also secured a grant for new playground equipment . In addition , the district is working with several community colleges on a program to provide instruction on drone piloting , an emerging career field .
