Pam Henry , current board president and school director in the Cheltenham Township School District in Montgomery County since 2017
What motivated you to become involved in board service ? “ And how are the children ?” is the traditional greeting of Maasai tribe warriors . Believing “ the true strength of the community is determined by the well-being of the children ” led me to become an education advocate . Being a board member enables me to influence policies , funding , and resource allocation for our scholars and provide equal access to high-quality education .
What issue in public education is most important to you right now ? While costs for educating students are increasing , funding for schools continues to be unfair and inadequate . State funding must improve so school districts can provide equitable and holistic learning opportunities .
What is your biggest passion outside of board service ? I love going to the beach ! Listening to the waves and looking at the ocean relaxes me . My husband and I go to local beaches and travel to Caribbean destinations .
If you are employed / volunteer , where do you work / volunteer and what is your job ? I work at eMoney Advisor , a fintech company that provides financial planning software . As director of employee success , I manage a team which focuses on employee lifecycle , onboarding employees , learning and development , employee engagement , performance management , and offboarding .
Photo Caption I chose the Learning Commons at Cedarbrook Middle School in Cheltenham . This fun academic hub features physical and electronic books , technology and allows students to collaborate and learn in a really cool space ! Photo credit : Lyla Duey is a Cheltenham resident and has a child who is a student in Cheltenham Township School District .
What was your favorite extracurricular activity when you were in school and / or your favorite subject ? My favorite activity was participating in team competitions . Although I didn ’ t have a favorite subject , teachers that used interactive and fun learning methods were my favorite classes .
What aspect of your education has changed the most ( or not at all ) since you were a student ? The acknowledgment and discussion about the inequities in the educational experience for Black children and other children of color is more prevalent . These inequities have always existed , but little has been done to dismantle systemic barriers and elevate the learning experience for all students . We are interconnected so when some of us aren ’ t doing well , it impacts everyone . At Cheltenham , we hosted a year of community meetings to create our equity statement and policy . This moved us from discussion to action , and the journey to equity continues .
Where did you graduate from school ? I graduated from Edward W . Bok Technical High School in Philadelphia . I received my bachelor ’ s degree in human resources from Neumann University .
