Superintendent of the Year
Dr . Khalid Mumin , superintendent of the Reading School District , was honored as the 2021 PASA Superintendent of the Year . In his remarks during the opening session , Mumin thanked PASA and school leaders in general for their commitment to public education and encouraged them to keep advocating for students : “ We are the leaders who are equipped with the skills and passion to really make hope a reality for our children , which is focusing on the health and safety of all kids .”
CONFERENCE-RELATED EVENTS
Equity Summit
This year ’ s Virtual Equity Summit , focused on developing systems of equity for a new generation , featured presentations by directors of school equity and other leaders from multiple districts across the state . Topics included districts ’ journeys to develop equity programs , addressing the achievement gap , empowering students through equitable practices , integrating all voices into educational systems and uplifting the voices of students . In closing , a panel of school leaders discussed the role , trials , needs and successes of programs in several districts . Attendees were also invited to watch brief , recorded video presentations by students of color ( and recent high school graduates ) who expressed their personal viewpoints on equity and diversity in their schools , experiences with inequity , student advocacy and student mental health .
Start Strong
PSBA ’ s Virtual Start Strong event provided attendees with tools and tips for successfully onboarding new school directors . Staff experts addressed the importance of board culture , best practices in welcoming new members to the Team of 10 and how to incorporate PSBA ’ s onboarding materials into current practices of the board . Registrants received a New Director Onboarding Manual , Onboarding Leadership Guide and the First Year At-A-Glance document . For those unable to attend but interested in this topic , the Start Strong board retreat and Start Strong consultation are two more ways to receive the training and materials .
School Law Workshop
School solicitors and leaders gathered virtually for the 2021 School Law Workshop to hear the latest legal developments affecting schools . Topics included COVID-19 impacts , developments in responding to Right-to-Know Law requests and the Mahanoy Area School District v . B . L . case .
At the PA School Board Solicitor ’ s Association ’ s ( PSBSA ) annual business meeting , held in conjunction with this event , PSBA ’ s Chief Legal Officer Stuart Knade was presented with the PSBSA President ’ s Award for Distinguished Career Achievement in School Law . This award is presented annually to a school solicitor who has contributed to Pennsylvania school law through achievement at the highest level of professional accomplishment , has donated remarkable energy and talent to PSBSA , its members and Pennsylvania public schools , and whose generosity of spirit , expertise and fellowship reflect and promote the PSBSA ’ s strong tradition of collegiality . In his nomination letter , Attorney John Audi noted Knade ’ s considerable accomplishments , including his service as a solicitor for school boards for more than 30 years , writing of numerous complex and successful amicus briefs , and his decorated service in the U . S . armed forces .
