PSBA Advocacy Ambassadors connect local lawmakers to their school districts , helping facilitate legislators ’ virtual or in-person visits to schools through the Show Them What It Takes program . PSBA also invites members to participate in an annual Advocacy Day at the state Capitol , where the association facilitates face-to-face meetings with legislators and their staff in their offices . Other effective ways to engage legislators include submitting an op-ed to a local newspaper or even reaching out to legislators on social media .
New school directors may be concerned about not being able to answer a legislator ’ s questions immediately . However , it ’ s OK to follow up later with more information . Education on the issues is key to effective advocacy . Under the Advocacy & News tab on the PSBA website are links to the weekly Legislative EDition newsletter and talking points in line with the association ’ s legislative platform , as well as issue pages and other special reports on topics moving at the Capitol , so school directors can stay up to date .

The work of school boards is year-round and crucial decisions are being made throughout the year . That ’ s why is important for new school directors to get up to speed on the role as soon as possible . PSBA recently mailed packages to all newly elected school directors that contain resources to help members do just that . Inside are two printed guides from our Essentials series . Essentials of School Board Service : A Guide to Surviving Your First Year answers the questions most commonly asked by new school directors in an easy-to-use Q & A format . Essentials of Parliamentary Procedure : A Survival Guide for Pennsylvania School Boards is a handy reference for board meeting protocol on everything from making a motion to when a quorum is needed . These handbooks , along with other helpful tools , can also be downloaded from myPSBA under the Resources tab .
PSBA also offers an array of online courses and webinars on the myPSBA member portal in everything from school law basics to school equity to board culture . The Roadmap to Success , also included in the mailed package , recommends specific courses for review throughout the year . It also highlights the New School Directors Monthly Exchange – an opportunity for first-term school directors to engage in guided discussion on Zoom with PSBA staff experts .
