The thing I enjoy most about school

board service is the nights when we have student recognition

at the board meetings , because it ’ s all about the students .

“ I ’ d always been involved in the schools , with the PTOs and we have a community advisory council that I was a part of for several years . Honestly , that was really the next step that came about naturally for community service ,” he says . Noticing his interest and experience , existing school directors who were also on the community advisory committee encouraged him to run for school board . His involvement with LCTI and PSBA soon followed .
More than eight years later , Hein is preparing to enter his third term at Parkland . Along with the difficulties presented by COVID-19 and other issues , there are definitely high points of board service . “ The thing I enjoy most about school board service is the nights when we have student recognition at the board meetings , because it ’ s all about the students . Just seeing them come in and be recognized for their efforts from academic to arts to athletics at the state , local and national levels , it ’ s just so rewarding because , truly , that ’ s why we ’ re in it .”
As finance manager for a healthcare insurance company , Hein brings his valuable accounting experience to the school board , although financial rules and procedures for health care differ from those for education . He ’ s also accustomed to managing and being part of a team , which he says has helped him interact effectively with various personalities on the board and work through potentially difficult moments .
These qualities have also informed his leadership at PSBA , which includes service as a liaison , as well as on the Leadership Development , Audit , and Legislative Advisory committees . Helping member districts meet their challenges , despite differences in demographics , size or location , is a responsibility he finds fulfilling .
Looking ahead
As far as what those future challenges may be , Hein anticipates that the pandemic will continue to create questions for school districts , particularly in regard to vaccines for younger children and how that may affect mask-wearing . Other frontline issues include charter school funding reform and accountability as well as fair funding for public education . “ That whole process needs to be updated . The legislature should follow through with what it has already passed regarding the basic education money that is intended to go through the funding formula ,” he says .
Safety and security issues are also at the top of the list for items affecting schools this year , Hein says . As PSBA ’ s representative on the statewide School Safety and Security Committee , established within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency by Act 44 of 2018 , he says it ’ s important for the association to be included in the committee ’ s discussions . “ Whether it ’ s environmental , whether it ’ s buildings and grounds , whether it ’ s mental health that the state is trying to advocate for , PSBA needs to have a voice .
