OUTSIDE STORAGE TIPS …
Today RV basement storage is the norm, greatly increasing the capacity to store some serious cargo. However, if you still need space, here are a few solutions to consider.
• Before storing anything in the storage compartment found at the base of the RV, place items in rugged storage bags to protect against dust and dirt. The variety of sizes available will help keep the smallest to the largest items clean and dry.
• Add more rear storage. A platform off the rear of your motorhome will provide extra storage. Design and build for the type and amount of items you want to carry. A 2-inch hitch extender works great if you are towing a car. This will extend the receiver out about 18 inches. This provides extra space for a platform while still allowing you to tow your vehicle.
• RV basement storage is an option not to overlook as it allows you to transport heavier items when traveling or a place for those items used less frequently. Modern fifth wheel trailers have a space under the bathroom that is usually a large accessible storage space from either side. This provides an 8-foot wide pass-through space holding everything from holiday decorations to seasonal wardrobe.
• Large Plastic Storage Tubs, like the ones Rubbermaid offers, provide excellent water-tight & dust-proof storage. These plastic totes keep everything neat, organized and clean. They make finding items much easier than having loose piles of things stuffed inside with no rhyme or reason.
• Build an extra closet. If you pull an RV travel trailer, the space in your tow vehicle( especially a pickup truck) can become your add-on closet. An enclosed cap or truck topper provides an 8-foot long space that can be equipped with cabinets, drawers- even a roll out platform for easy access. Building a clothes closet with a rod in your pickup truck quickly doubles storage space in most medium-sized RV travel trailers.
With any changes or modifications you may make, please remember:
your RV is only rated to carry so much weight. Know your Gross Vehicle Rating( GVR) for your specific make and model. This is the maximum total weight allowed for the RV and everything in it, including water and waste. If you don’ t know this information, take your RV to the nearest truck stop to have it weighed. That way you can be sure your RV weight is within the legal limit.
