The Best Way
to the Byway
What’s the top reason to buy an RV? To
see America, according to annual owner
surveys by the Recreation Vehicle Industry
Association and Cvent Research. RVs offer
travelers unparalleled flexibility and freedom, along with great visibility, ultra-comfortable seating and all the comforts of
home. RVing is also the most affordable
way to travel. Even after factoring in fuel
and ownership costs, a family can save
27-62 percent by vacationing in their RV.
There’s no better way to get off crowded
highways and enjoy Pennsylvania’s byways! Here’s how to prepare for back roads
RV adventuring:
• Get your RV (and tow vehicle) road-ready
-- check all fluid levels, battery, brakes,

• Gear up for fun! Stow or tow your favorite outdoor playthings from bikes to boats.
Balance the load from side to side, with
heavy items low and light items high, for
maximum fuel efficiency and safe handling.
• Keep extra supplies on board in case

batteries, road flares, tool kit and plenty of
fresh water and food.
• Check your route for height or weight
restrictions, detours or closures. If you plan
to travel through a state forest, check their
website or contact their office for road
advisories.
• Be aware that in some rural and wilderness areas, cell phone reception may not
be available.
• Never drive through standing or
moving water!
•Look up campgrounds along your route
and call ahead for reservations, especially
during high travel season. See p. 21-42 for
Pennsylvania RV and Campground Association member listings, by region.
The Connected Camper
Even on the road less traveled, today’s RVers are staying connected! Technology
has become an important tool, with over three-fourths of RV travelers using smartphones or laptops on the road, and 82 percent using Wi-Fi at the
