Watson was still an assistant , then under Scott Hutchins , when the Pioneers blanked Eastside 4-0 in the 2021 2A final . His younger brother , Eli , was a starter on that squad and went 1-for-2 with a triple while scoring a run in that victory .
In October of 2022 , Watson was named Providence ’ s head coach following Hutchins ’ resignation .
In his first year on the job , he guided the Pioneers to a 25-4 record and a sectional title . In his second , he led them to their third state championship .
“ To be able to have one at each position , it ’ s special ,” said Watson , who ’ s 1-year-old son Waylon was a regular at games this season . “ It ’ s very heartfelt and I just feel really good about that .”
