“ One of our challenges this year ,” said Senior Avery Drury , “ was the number of senior leaders that we had . It wasn ’ t more difficult because there were ten , it just took us a little longer to work through it .” Senior Camila Adams agreed . “ We had to all get on the same page before we could deliver the same message and help the younger players .”
Do coaches prepare the students to play against an individual team or to be the best they can be ? “ We actually try to do a little of both ,” explained Coach Purichia . “ The coaches know what to expect from the teams on our schedule , so we will practice to combat what we expect to see without the girls practicing against a specific team . We want to help them understand the game well enough that during the fast pace of a match , they instinctively know how to react . They need to make decisions quickly without having to look over to the bench for direction .”
Player buy-into the program is also strong because of the amount of individual time and attention each player is given . “ If you came to one of our practices , you would think everything was simply chaotic . It is organized chaos . Everyone is moving in different directions . No one ends up hitting each other . We know exactly what we want to do . We have been doing it with each other for so long that it has become very efficient . Each coach is working with a smaller group of players . The girls learn skills and understand the game .”
Providence Volleyball has five state championships to prove they have built a dynasty . But the young ladies learn so much more than just how to hit a volleyball . The real legacy of this program can be seen year-after-year , generation-after-generation in the productive and successful women these athletes become .
