Assessing Your ProTeam Program
Most Frequently Asked Questions about Grading
Who is accountable for giving grades?
v ProTeam Teacher(s): The ProTeam teacher primarily determines the grades for the majority of the
ProTeam students’ work.
v ProTeam Peers: ProTeam students will gain valuable experience from assessing the work of others; the
ProTeam students will learn from the feedback from their peers. ProTeam students can use rubrics included
in the DreamQuest curriculum.
v Self-Evaluation: ProTeam students may assess their own work and attach an explanation or rubric to justify
the grade. Ask them to evaluate their lessons that they will present. Reflective writing that portrays the
student’s thinking, opinions, values, etc., is particularly important with journals and portfolios.
How should I grade group work?
Although most of the grades will be awarded on an individual basis, some grades will be given to a pair or small
group of students for a joint project. Sometimes, everyone in the group should receive the same grade; at other
times, group members might receive different grades. The following are strategies that can be used to determine
valid group scores:
v Ask each ProTeam student to keep a log or calendar of duties to indicate exactly what each student
contributes to a joint assignment.
v As an in-class writing assignment, ask each student to list and/or describe what each group member
contributed to the assignment. Tell them to include estimated times for each part of the project.
v Use “Rubric for ProTeam Group Projects, Samples A and B” in the DreamQuest curriculum to score each
participant’s contributions to the project.
