Creating a Home Study Center
Creating a study center at home is an essential first step in establishing a consistent routine for completing daily homework,
long term projects, and studying for exams. Here are some helpful hints:
Location! Location! Location!
Students need a place in which to work. Wherever the study area is located, it must be quiet, well lit, and stocked with the
necessary supplies.
Beds and studying don’t make the best of friends, so it is probably best to study at a desk or table with a comfortable chair.
Television, video games, music, and social media access are great rewards after assignments are complete.
Homework Survival Kit
Some frustration can be avoided if a survival kit of supplies is available for use during study time. Here are some
suggestions for a well-stocked study area:
pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, markers, colored pencils, writing paper, tape, hole punch, pencil sharpener, glue or paste,
ruler, stapler, paper clips, index cards, a calculator, compass, folders, and construction paper or poster board. Also helpful
are a good dictionary, atlas, and thesaurus or access to the internet for reference and research purposes.
Remember to check and restock as supplies are used. Reserve these supplies only for homework use.
Schedule Daily Homework Time
Homework, like other activities, needs to be scheduled into a student’s life. Pre-planned time set aside each day during
which all homework is completed will encourage good study habits. Even if your child has no homework, this daily
scheduled time can be used to read, organize, or review.
Encourage Independent Work
Homework teaches students responsibility. Through homework, students learn skills they must develop as they grow into
independent, successful adults -- how to follow directions, how to begin and complete a task, and how to manage time.
Motivate with Praise
Praise is a powerful motivator. Specific compliments about a completed task may help to encourage your child to continue
with successful homework habits.
